Host range and symptoms
First reported
in Cynara scolymus; from California, USA; by Leach and Oswald (1950).
Natural host range and symptoms
Symptoms persist.
- Cynara scolymus - veinal necrosis, leaf distortion and
stunting.
Transmission
Virus transmitted by mechanical inoculation.
Geographical distribution
Spreads in the North American
region; the USA.
Experimental host range
Few (<3) families susceptible.
Experimentally infected plants mostly show Leaf distortion and stunting.
Diagnostically susceptible host species and symptoms
- Callistephus chinensis, Helichrysum bracteatum - chlorotic local
lesions, systemic leaf distortion.
- Centaurea cyanus, Cynara cardunculus,
C. scolymus - systemic veinal necrosis, leaf distortion and stunting.
- Helianthus annuus - chlorotic local lesions, symptomless systemic
infection.
- Tagetes - symptomless local and systemic infection.
- Zinnia elegans - necrotic local lesions, systemic veinal necrosis,
leaf distortion and stunting.
Diagnostically insusceptible host
species
Calendula officinalis, Cichorium endiva, Cosmos
bipinnatus, Lactuca sativa, Taraxacum officinale.

Comments on host-range
The virus
seems only to infect species of the Asteraceae; it failed to infect unnamed
species in 18 other families.
Sources of host-range data
Leach
and Oswald (1950), Morton (1961).
Physical and
biochemical properties
Properties of particles in sap
TIP:
55-60 °C. LIV: 2-3 days (at 19oC). DEP: log10 minus 3-4.
Particle morphology
Virions filamentous; not enveloped;
with a clear modal length; of 582 nm.

General comments
Although first
reported in 1950, the virus was probably present in California two or more
decades earlier (Morton, 1961).
